Adventures Within Another - Reading

Join us Monday, June 12th, for a reading with the Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute as they celebrate the release of Adventures Within Another!

Earnest and eye-opening, Adventures Within Another spotlights the next generation of writers whose poetry and prose explore the people, places, and things shaping their personal and cultural identities.

Adventures Within Another is a collection of poems and essays by ninth-grade students from Como Park Senior High School who spent six months crafting these original works with guidance from the Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute. Throughout their writing, many students described important people in their lives from secret crushes to loved ones who have passed away. The young writers crafted pieces in response to the prompt, “What do you hear when you think of home?”, and bonded together through cultural artifacts identifying them with a particular community.

Come celebrate the public release of Adventures Within Another with student readings and refreshments at Moon Palace Books.

“I heard the machines of monsters beeping at me, giving me IV fluids and insulin drip, and I was just told I’m diabetic.” – Trinity Ann Marie

“I was told to live life/ The afterlife will be taken care of.” – Idil Hassan

“I’m from ‘Don’t sing while you eat’/ Or the tiger eats you.” – Ktru

Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute (MOI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills and homework, emphasizing cross-curricular creativity. According to best-selling author Dave Eggers, “Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute is a place where the pure, unadulterated weirdness of kids is honored and amplified.” As Minnesota consistently reports one of the largest educational opportunity gaps between racial groups in the country, MOI strives to echo the ethos of the 826 National network by creating a place where no student’s idea is too weird, too outlandish, or too off-topic to be explored.
